Abstract:

For the last three years, deep snows have sidetracked White Pine Chapter's efforts to see Idaho mountain primrose (Douglasia idahoensis) on Square Mountain, near Slate Creek Ranger Station. This year Angela Sondenaa led us up the steep climb from the Salmon River, and we were rewarded. Deep-pink flowers covered the low-growing plants and filled the air with a sweet rich scent! Idaho mountain primrose starts to bloom just as the snow melts, and fortunately for us stays in bloom for 3-4 weeks (since a LOT of snow has to melt before the road to 8,020 foot Square Mountain becomes driveable).
