Abstract:

The U. S. Fish and Wildlife here proposes to revise the List of Migratory Birds by (1) adding 1 species that belongs to a family covered by the Canadian and Mexican treaties and that is now known to occur and breed regularly in the United States; (2) adding 2 species covered by the Japanese and Russian treaties that were mistakenly omitted from previous lists; (3) adding 1 species of regular occurrence in the United States that now belongs to a protected family as a result of a recent taxonomic revision; (4) adding 26 newly recognized species; (5) removing 1 species that is no longer considered valid; (6) changing the English (common) and scientific names of 78 species to conform with modern nomenclature; and (7) correcting an error in the common (English) name of 1 species. The net result of these proposed changes is the addition of 29 species (25 by name only), which will bring the total number of protected species to 861; only 4 of the 29 proposed additions are not currently covered by the existing list as former subspecies of a listed species. DATES: Comments must be submitted on or before November 13, 2001.
