Abstract:

In evaluating the effects of habitat change on Piute ground squirrels (Spermophilus mollis), it is important to understand population patterns. The key patterns include the distribution of the populations in space, and how population production varies with time and space. It is also important to understand the processes that drive these patterns; two of these are particularly critical for management. First is the linkage between food plant availability and population production; management decisions can directly influence this linkage. Secondly, the dispersal processes whereby productivity in one time and place can lead to population increases elsewhere is important in producing the observed distribution of animals across the landscape. Habitat fragmentation will influence these dispersal processes.
