My husband and I were riding mountain bikes on a Forest Service Road west of the Council Cuperin Road outside Council, Idaho. We were about four miles from the intersection of the forest service road and the Council Cuperin Road about one mile west of the public camp ground ( about 24 miles from Council) and about 1 plus miles from an intersection with another forest service road that traverses below a ridgeline south of the paved road. We had just come around a bend in the road when we say two black and one dark grey wolf pups playing in the middle of the road. We stopped about 20 feet from them and watched as they each moved off the road each in a different direction. The underbrush was sufficient that we could not track them once they were about two feet off the road. We were guests in the area and one of our hosts recalled seeing a black wolf in the same area about three months before. I estimate the pups were about 40 pounds. Their heads had become more adult with long noses and their tails were very long but not yet fully fluffed out. They did not seem panicked but purposeful about finding cover. We did not see any sign of adult wolves and we did not leave the road to investigate.
