"Small injured owl unable to fly" was reported to IDFG by BLM employee from the field. Owl was identified by IDFG as juvenile male long-eared owl based on size, plumage coloration/pattern, and presence of ear tufts, which were about half size of an adult. Owl had an infected compound fracture on its right humerus and was in poor condition. Elected to euthanize. Possible cause of injury was collision with nearby guy and electrical wires.

Habitat Description:
Location where owl was found was atypical long-eared owl habitat. Area found is open Wyoming big sagebrush-steppe habitat and relatively dry, steep terrain. Long-eared owls are more typically found in densely vegetated cottonwood riparian floodplains or conifer stands. Unknown if this was a migratory or nomadic, vs. resident, individual.
