Becomes familiar with hatchery operations and target-fish (Chinook salmon, steelhead, sockeye salmon, rainbow trout and cutthroat trout) life histories in order to share that information with hatchery visitors on daily tours. Maintains hatchery visitor center. Updates information boards (information regarding steelhead and salmon returns). Distributes fish stocking and fish trapping information to area businesses. Updates pre-recorded radio stations information weekly. Tends to any other visitor information services Additional time is often available to the tour guide, with which they can work towards becoming familiar with hatchery operations, interacting with the public in other informational venues, or providing additional services to Sawtooth Valley visitors. Assist with other fish culture duties as time permits. Other responsibilities include: weighing fish feed and feeding fish, cleaning and caring for fish rearing vessels, assist in the trapping of Chinook salmon, maintaining grounds and equipment, and cleaning office and hatchery facilities. On occasion, weekend work rotation will be required. Will require standing and working in cold water for up to five hours per shift: lifting and carrying equipment up to 60 pounds; working in extreme weather conditions. Possibility of dormitory style housing provided on site.
Demonstrated ability to handle responsibility and work independently. Patience, friendly personality, and good communication skills are essential. Course work in a Natural Resource/Biological Science is strongly preferred, but not mandatory. Previous fish hatchery experience a plus but not required. Candidates with course work and/or previous experience will be given preference. Valid Driver’s License is required. Applicant must be at least 18 years of age.
