Directions: From Riggins, US 95 S for ~1 mi; L (E) on Big Salmon River Rd (CR 1614/FR 103); zero odometer; road parallels the Salmon River for 20+ mi.
Description: All along the Salmon River, Lewis’s Woodpecker abound. Check Allison Ck (mp 9.7) and Spring Bar Campground (mp 10.4) for riparian species. Also check Van Ck (mp 11.2), Elkhorn Ck (mp 14.7), and Carry Ck (mp 23.2). These areas are good for American Kestrel, Northern Flicker, Mountain Chickadee, Cedar Waxwing, Red-eyed Vireo, MacGillivray’s Warbler, Yellow-breasted Chat, Song Sparrow, and Lazuli Bunting in spring and fall. Look for Bald Eagle, Northern Flicker, Hairy Woodpecker, Golden-crowned Kinglet, and Black-capped Chickadee during the winter. Check rock areas for White-throated Swift, Canyon Wren, and Chukar. Walk across the Wind River foot-bridge to explore the 1992 Scott Fire area for woodpeckers.
