Southwest Proposals for 2013 Big Game Seasons

Southwest Region -- Nampa (South half)

Southwest Region

White-tailed Deer
Consider opening general season Any-Weapon deer hunts 5 days earlier on October 5 instead of October 10.  This season change is anticipated to increase hunting opportunity. It may result in an increase harvest in some units, but not in others.

Mule Deer
- Stabilize Unit 39 population by reducing harvest of antlerless deer.
Justification: Fawn survival is expected to be low this year due to low weight during December capture.  Population had been declining by 18% between surveys.  Fawn survival was also poor 2 winters ago.  Unit may be near or below objective.
- Consider opening general season Any-Weapon deer hunts 5 days earlier on October 5 instead of October 10. This season change is anticipated to increase hunting opportunity. It may result in an increase harvest in some units, but not in others.

Elk
- Stabilize Unit 39 population by reducing harvest of cows.
Justification: Cow survival is estimated at 85% and many wintering elk (66% of collared elk in Mayfield area) come from Magic Valley region units and inflate winter counts in Unit 39.  Increase late season Landowner Permission Hunts to address conflicts with migrating elk from Magic Valley.  Reduce Controlled Hunt cow tags and cap A-tag muzzleloaders and archers, shorten season, or provide Controlled Hunt for muzzleloaders to reduce harvest among groups.
- Increase tags in Unit 41 where we can provide more opportunity for bull harvest.

Black Bear
- No changes proposed.

Mountain Lion
- No changes proposed.

Gray Wolf
- No changes proposed.

DEER CONTROLLED HUNT AREA DESCRIPTIONS:

- Eliminate antlerless Controlled Hunts from Unit 25 which has fallen below population objective for elk.
- Adjust antlerless tag levels (upward or downward) in Weiser River and Brownlee Elk Zones (Units 22, 31, & 32A) Controlled Hunts pending elk population estimates derived from February 2013 aerial survey flights.
