Anadromous (ocean-going) salmon seasons are set annually at the March or April Commission meeting. Watch the for the agenda on the Idaho Dept. of Fish and Game website.
There are a number of variables that affect when we open salmon season, every year. River flows, timing of fish passing Bonneville Dam, ocean conditions, even down-stream sport and commercial fishing can have an influence on our season setting process. We need to make sure that enough Chinook will be returning to the Snake River Basin to meet our hatchery production needs and provide a surplus for native Americans and sportsmen to harvest.
