Description: With nearly a mile of river access and a trail meandering around a wetland and willows, Morgan Bar is a productive birding site for riparian species. Canada Goose, Mallard, Green-winged Teal and Common Merganser frequent this stretch of river. Watch for the more elusive Wood Duck and Hooded Merganser that nest in nearby cottonwood cavities. Great Blue Heron are commonly observed. Bald Eagle can be seen in this reach year-round. An Osprey pair occupies a nesting structure along the riverbank from April through mid-Sept. Listen for Sora, Wilson’s Snipe, and Marsh Wren in the wetland areas and scan the riverbanks for glimpses of Spotted Sandpiper and American Dipper. Look for Common Nighthawk, Tree, Violet-green, Northern Rough-winged, Cliff, and Barn Swallows, Lewis’s Woodpecker, and Mountain Bluebird. Other summer residents include Yellow Warbler, Warbling Vireo, Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers, Western Wood-Pewee, Willow Flycatcher, Say’s Phoebe, and Eastern and Western Kingbirds. In the rocky canyons to the west of Morgan Bar, listen for Chukar and Canyon and Rock Wrens.
