Upper Snake Region Fishing Report
Monday, May 21, 2012

This report highlights a few of the best places to fish, what anglers are using and what they are catching. The information is compiled from regional Fish and Game fishery managers, local tackle shops and anglers.
South Fork Snake – Fishing on the South Fork is picking up nicely. Flows from the dam are stabilized and should remain so for the foreseeable future. Anglers are catching fish on streamers, bead heads and occasionally on dry flies. Look for rainbow trout in the shallower gravelly side channels where spawning is ending. Anglers are strongly encouraged to harvest all the rainbow trout they catch in the South Fork – many have been tagged with a coded wire tag and are worth money when returned to the Fish and Game office in Idaho Falls.
Henrys Fork Snake River – Fishing is picking up in the higher sections of the drainage where runoff isn’t having the impact it is having on the lower river. Box Canyon, Mack’s Inn and Last Chance were opened up to fishing in 2011, and anglers are reporting good catch rates. Streamers and bead heads are working best.
Anglers are also reporting success in Birch Creek, one of the small streams in the Upper Snake Region that is mostly unaffected by runoff conditions. Nymphs, spinners, night crawlers and dry flies are all producing fish.
