Directions: From Victor, 17 mi SE on ID 33; follow signs to Jackson; on the way up the pass, bird at numerous pull-outs and recreation sites along Trail Creek; on top of the pass, park in large parking area to the R (S) and walk S on rd marked “Wildlife Viewing Area” for 0.5 mi to communication tower.
Description: This route is very snowy in the winter and sometimes closed. Safe birding without skis is possible between May and Oct. Clark’s Nutcracker can be seen year-round. Cassin’s Finch, Red Crossbill, and Pine Siskin nest here. In spring and summer, watch for Red-naped Sapsucker, Hairy Woodpecker, Mountain Chickadee, Brown Creeper, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Hermit Thrush, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Western Tanager, White-crowned Sparrow, and Dark-eyed Junco. Around wildflowers, look for Black-chinned, Calliope, and Broad-tailed Hummingbirds. Calling for Boreal Owl may be worthwhile any time of the year.
