Directions: In Swan Valley, at intersection of ID 31/US 26, zero odometer; W on US 26 (to Idaho Falls); L (SW) on Snake River Rd (mi 3.4); L into Spring Ck boat landing; return to Snake River rd; zero odometer; turn L (SE); follow Snake River Rd as it parallels the river; at mi 0.9 turnout on the L; mi 1.1 stay L at intersection; mi 1.3 turnout on L for Fall Ck waterfall; park here or at pull-out at mi 2.0; walk the network of trails that provides views; continue driving along rd; pass the Falls Campground at mi 2.3; group campground at mi 2.7; mi 3.2 primitive campsite on R; mi 10 parking area on R; mi 12.5 stay to R; mi 15.1 is jct of Snake River Rd/FR 076 and FR 058; turn L following FR 076; mi 15.8 is a stop sign; 2 CHOICES: 1) turn L and go to Palisades Dam and intersection with US 26 at mi 16.7. 2) turn R to go to Calamity Campground and boat ramp in 0.2 mi.
Description: This stretch of the Snake River is part of an Important Bird Area. The IBA contains some 126 bird species, hosts the largest breeding population of Bald Eagle in Idaho, and was rated the most unique and biodiverse ecosystem in Idaho by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The South Fork of the Snake River stretches some 60 miles from Palisades Dam to its confluence with the Henrys Fork. This area may be one of the last strongholds for the rare Yellow-billed Cuckoo in Idaho.
