Directions: From Sandpoint, US 95 N; E on ID 200 toward Hope; many pull-outs for viewing; pass Hope and East Hope and turn R (W) to Sam Owen Park (daily fee is required to access the beach, picnic area and day use area.); continue S on ID 200 to view Denton Slough; mp 51.5 R on gravel rd to drift yard and river; continue S on ID 200 to mp 55.3; R to Johnson Creek Sportsman’s Access; go 4 mi.
Description: Hope provides good viewing opportunities for Common Loon in Oct, as well as for many grebe species. Denton Slough is a Western Grebe nesting area (30+ nests) with courtship displays in June. Summer waterbirds also include Double-crested Cormorant, Great Blue Heron, Canada Goose, and Black Tern. Thousands of waterfowl (American Wigeon, Redhead, Lesser Scaup, Green-winged Teal, Mallard, Tundra Swan, Canada Goose) use Denton Slough during migration. At Johnson Creek, swallows, warblers, flycatchers, Eastern Kingbird, Bald Eagle, and Common Merganser can be seen in the spring and summer.
