Site Location

Directions: ST. MARIES RIVER RD: turn S off ID 3 in St. Maries on 1st St; 1 mi through neighborhood to St. Maries River Rd. ST JOE RIVER RD: in St. Maries, at junction of ID 3/ID 5, travel on ID 3 N; cross St. Joe River; at mp 85 turn R (N) on FR 50 (St. Joe River Rd); explore areas at mp 2.3, 10.7, 13.0, 16.0, 16.3, 16.6, 24.2, 29.8, 33.6 and 34.2; scan between mp 11-13 for Northern Pygmy-Owl (Nov-March); the town of Avery is 26.7 mi E of St. Maries and FR 50 ends 29 mi E of Avery.

Description: The St. Joe River route will lead you up the Shadowy St. Joe, the highest navigable river in the world. Wetland and cottonwood forests accompany this river and provide unique birding opportunities. Highlights include Tundra Swan and Northern Pygmy-Owl. Look for Bald Eagle, Osprey, Canada Goose, Mallard, Wood Duck, American Wigeon, Great Blue Heron, Ruffed Grouse, Turkey, American Dipper, and Great Horned Owl. Western Tanager can be seen during spring and summer
