Directions: From Ketchum, ID 75 N for 30 mi; TITUS LAKE: just before Galena Pass (mp 157.9) on R (NE) side of rd is Titus Lake Trailhead Parking (trail is across highway); hike the 4 mi round trip to lake. FOREST: just N of pass on R (N) side of the Hwy is a dirt rd heading N; explore alpine/timberline habitat. GALENA OVERLOOK: continue N on ID 75 to mp 158.9; HEADWATERS: continue N on ID 75; descend Galena Pass; at mp 162.2 turn L (S) onto FR 215; go S for 3 mi up headwaters of the Salmon River.

Description: Central Idaho in general, and Galena Summit in particular, support scattered stands of whitebark pine, which host a unique assortment of bird species, including Clark’s Nutcracker. In the alpine habitats of Titus Lake Trail and Galena Pass search for Golden Eagle, Calliope Hummingbird, Violet-green Swallow, Mountain Bluebird, White-crowned Sparrow, Pine Grosbeak, Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch, and Black Rosy-Finches. In mixed-conifer stands, look for Blue and Spruce Grouse, Northern Goshawk, Williamson’s Sapsucker, American Three-toed Woodpecker, Olive-sided and Hammond’s Flycatchers, Gray Jay, Mountain Chickadee, Townsend’s Solitaire, Hermit Thrush, Pine Grosbeak, Cassin’s Finch, White-winged Crossbill, and Evening Grosbeak. Typical summer birds at the Salmon River headwaters include Spotted Sandpiper, Black-chinned Hummingbird, Red-naped Sapsucker, Downy Woodpecker, Western Wood-Pewee, Willow Flycatcher, American Dipper, MacGillivray’s, Wilson’s, and Yellow Warblers, Western Tanager, and Brewer’s, Vesper, Savannah, and Lincoln’s Sparrows.
