Directions: In Salmon, turn L (S) onto the park access rd from Main St; Island Park is located under the Main St Bridge spanning the Salmon River.
Description: The park sits on a long, narrow island surrounded by the Salmon River. The east channel is a favorite year-round spot for Mallard and feeding site for Great Blue Heron, Spotted Sandpiper, American Dipper, and Belted Kingfisher. In winter, Bufflehead and Common Goldeneye can be seen. Bald Eagle occasionally forage along the river channels in winter, and a pair of nesting Osprey can be easily viewed from April through Sept. Other raptors, including Red-tailed, Sharp-shinned, and Cooper’s Hawks, American Kestrel, and Great Horned Owl are present year-round. Typical summer resident songbirds are Western Wood-Pewee, Tree and Violet-green Swallows, Gray Catbird, Yellow Warbler, Western Tanager, and Bullock’s Oriole. Also look for Common Nighthawk and Northern Flicker. Large flocks of Bohemian and Cedar Waxwings can be seen on occasion in winter.
