Public Use of Snow Peak WMA

The Snow Peak WMA is open to public use year round and is enjoyed by a wide variety of recreational users. Backpackers, hikers, photographers, hunters and fishermen all enjoy the WMA.

By far, the heaviest public use occurs in the fall during the hunting season. Two tactics are commonly used to hunt the WMA. Many hunters camp somewhere near the border and take daily forays off USFS Road 201. This is an effective strategy and elk and deer are harvested this way, but beware. It is much easier to walk into an area that it is to pack game out! “Out” of the WMA translates to uphill. It is essential to use good judgment as to how far to hunt from the road unless pack stock is available.

Hunters with pack stock normally opt for a high quality hunt in the uncrowded interior of the WMA. Excellent opportunities exist for pack trips, with approximately 40 miles of trail found within the borders. Numerous unimproved campsites are available and the possibility of harvesting a mature, branch-antlered bull is good.

All visitors are encouraged to come prepared and use caution while visiting the WMA. Numerous hazards associated with any back-country area are present. Carry emergency gear and exercise good judgment.
