General Information
Mission statement: The mission of the Red River Wildlife Management Area is to protect and enhance fish and wildlife populations and their habitats, to mitigate for habitat losses associated with the development and operation of the Federal hydroelectric system in the Columbia River Basin, to provide for compatible recreational uses, and to provide a setting for natural resource education and research.

Red River WMA occupies 314 acres that since the early 1900s was the Little Ponderosa Ranch. The portion of the Red River flowing directly through middle of the property is one of the last sections of the river that has not been straightened or heavily dredged for precious metals. A history of overgrazing and dredge mining throughout the entire meadow system of Red River has resulted in the loss of the willow/shrub component within the streams riparian area that is vital to maintaining habitat for bird species and low water temperatures for fish. Red River WMA has become an extremely important component in ongoing efforts to restore historical spawning habitat for Spring chinook salmon and mitigation for fish and wildlife habitat loss.
