Visiting Hours - Mud Lake Wildlife Management Area is open year-round and has no established visiting hours. School and other groups are encouraged to visit Mud Lake WMA in the spring when waterfowl numbers peak. Those interested in a WMA guided tour should call well in advance of the proposed trip date. IDFG personnel will make every effort to accommodate group trips.

Vehicles/Parking - Use of motorized vehicles, including ATV’s, is permitted only on roadways shown on this brochure map. These restrictions protect area vegetation and minimize wildlife disturbance. Please park only in designated areas. Snowmobiles are restricted to existing roads and the frozen surface of Mud Lake to reduce disturbance to wintering wildlife.
Nesting Area Restrictions - From January 15 through August 30, all watercraft are prohibited from that portion of Mud Lake lying west of the posted boundary running north and south through Mackenzie Point. This restriction protects nesting, molting and brooding waterfowl. The West Slough is closed seasonally to vehicles to provide undisturbed nesting and rearing areas for waterfowl and upland game birds.
Fishing/Hunting - Both hunting and fishing are allowed on Mud Lake WMA, but specific regulations and access to some WMA locations may change from year to year. Consult current regulations for more details. Decoys may not be placed earlier than two hours prior to legal shooting hours, and all decoys must be removed from any hunting site no later than two hours following legal shooting hours. Decoys cannot be left unattended on Mud Lake WMA lands.
Boating - Public boat ramps are located on the north and south shores of Mud Lake. Boaters, please note that portions of Mud Lake are closed seasonally to boating.
Camping - Overnight camping is permitted in designated areas for no more than ten consecutive days within any 30-day period.
Campfires/Firewood Fires are restricted to established fire pits and grills. Firewood cutting and removal of materials from their natural setting are prohibited.
Wildlife Observation/Photography - Mud Lake WMA provides excellent opportunities to view wildlife, particularly waterfowl and songbirds. Visitors are welcome to hike all open interior roads for wildlife viewing and photography purposes. Be sure to visit the Kaster Overlook Tower at Cormorant Bay to view colonial nesting birds. Pets - Pets must be leashed or under close control at all times on Mud Lake WMA, with the exception of bird dogs during hunting seasons. The release or abandonment of domestic animals on Mud Lake WMA is prohibited.
