Visiting Hagerman WMA

Visiting Hours - Hagerman WMA is open year-round and has no established visiting hours. Schools and other groups are encouraged to visit the WMA in the late winter when waterfowl numbers are high. Those interested in a WMA guided tour should call well in advance of the proposed trip date. IDFG personnel will make every effort to accommodate group trips.

Access for the Disabled - For persons with disabilities, access within Hagerman WMA varies by area. Visitors with special needs are encouraged to contact WMA personnel to determine which area(s) are most suitable for physically-challenged visitors. In all cases, visitors are encouraged to assess their own abilities before entering Hagerman WMA. Note that, thanks to personnel at Hagerman National Fish Hatchery, Oster Lake #1 is equipped with a fishing dock for persons with physical disabilities.

Vehicles/Parking - Use of motorized vehicles, including ATVs, is permited only on roadways shown on this brochure map. These restrictions protect area vegetation and minimize wildlife disturbance.

Wintering and Nesting Area Restrictions - A portion of Hagerman WMA is closed seasonally to both vehicle traffic and foot traffic to provide undisturbed wintering, nesting and rearing areas for waterfowl and upland game birds. Watch for these areas and make your conservation contribution by respecting area closures.

Wildlife Observation/Photography - Hagerman WMA provides excellent opportunities to view wildlife, particularly waterfowl and songbirds. Visitors are welcome to hike all open interior roads for wildlife viewing and photography purposes. To enchance your outing, a bird species checklist is available at the State Fish Hatchery. Many of the herons seen at Hagerman WMA, nest in a rookery along the Snake River, just a short distance from Hagrman WMA. This rookery is visible from U.S. Hwy 30, 4.5 miles south of Hagerman WMA. On the way, take time to view the spectacular waterfals streaming into the Snake River from the canyon wall.

Hunting/Fishing - Both fishing and upland hunting are allowed on Haterman WMA, but specific regulations and access to some WMA locations may change from year to year. Consult current regulations for more details. Please note that the spring fishing season is delayed on a portion of Hagerman WMA to lessen nesting waterfowl disturbance, and a 200-yard safety zone has been established around all hatchery residences and other WMA buildings. Areas within this zone are closed to hunting.

Camping - Overnight camping is prohibited on Haterman WMA lands.

Fires/Firewood Cutting - Fires and firewood cutting are prohibited on Hagerman WMA. Removal of materials from their natural setting is prohibited.
