General Information
Hagerman Wildlife Management Area (WMA), Idaho’s first WMA, was established principally to provide habitat for waterfowl and upland game birds. Using Pittman-Robertson funding, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) purchased 423 acres of land in 1940 and established Hagerman Valley Refuge. The fledgling wildlife refuge consisted primarily of pastureland and a portion of Riley Creek.

Since then, the area’s name has changed, and several parcels of adjacent land have been acquired, expanding Hagerman WMA to 880 acres. A portion of Hagerman WMA is utilized as a fish hatchery, with the balance of the property devoted to wildlife and wildlife habitat.
