Wildlife Gem State Wildlife Habitat Area provides habitat for a variety of songbirds, waterfowl and raptors, including roost and perch sites for bald eagles. From spring through fall the wildlife observer will see pied-billed grebe, American white pelican, double crested cormorant, black-crowned heron, Canada geese, mallard, gadwall, pintail and many more. A variety of raptors include great horned owl, red-tailed hawk, kestrel, bald eagles and osprey. Songbirds and others abound throughout the spring and summer months, including yellow warblers, western meadowlark, yellow-headed blackbird, American goldfinch, Savannah sparrow, white-crowned sparrow as well as many other less frequently seen.
Beaver, striped skunk, coyote, red fox, porcupine and cottontail rabbit are furbearers that are abundant or common on the WHA year-round. Mule deer, white-tailed deer and moose are frequent visitors to Gem State WHA throughout all seasons of the year and are easily spotted by the watchful wildlife observer. Elk are occasional visitors to the WHA and rarely sighted.
