General Information
The Gem State Wildlife Habitat Area is made up of 70.7 acres of riparian or streamside habitat, most of which was purchased by the City of Idaho Falls and transferred to the Idaho Department of Fish and Game. The property was needed to mitigate or reduce the effects of the Gem State Hydroelectric facility upon local wildlife habitat. Although small in size Gem State WHA supports a large variety of waterfowl, birds, small game and big game and is important to maintaining wildlife populations in this region. The WHA provides good wildlife viewing in spite of its size.

Gem State WHA Mission Statement
Manage the mitigation area portion of the Gem State Wildlife Habitat Area to fulfill the City of Idaho Falls commitment to provide riparian/wetland habitat as partial mitigation for losses associated with the Gem State Hydroelectric Project. Protect and enhance wildlife habitat while providing non-motorized public access for wildlife related recreational activities.
