General InformationIn 1993 the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) was gifted the Hillman Ranch by the Richard King Mellon Foundation, which became the Cecil D. Andrus WMA. Located northwest of the town of Cambridge in the Snake River breaks of Hell’s Canyon, the Andrus WMA is approximately 24,000 acres of prime mule deer and elk winter range, and supports year-round populations of chukars, forest grouse, gray partridge, black bear and other wildlife species. The WMA is comprised of lands owned by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, the Idaho Department of Lands, the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Forest Service and private landowners. The Idaho Department of Fish and Game works cooperatively with all of these entities to manage the lands within the WMA.
Providing high quality habitat for wildlife production and providing public hunting opportunity are the primary management goals at the Andrus WMA. The WMA also provides wildlife viewing, and the 30 miles of streams within the WMA, as well as adjacent Brownlee Reservoir, provide a diverse array of fishing opportunities. Livestock grazing occurs on the WMA, and the grazing program demonstrates compatible wildlife and livestock uses of rangelands.
