The ability to control water levels in Market Lake WMA’s various impoundments results in a diverse range of wetland habitats, attracting a broad spectrum of waterfowl and shorebirds. Mallards, Canada geese, canvasbacks, cinnamon and green-winged teal, northern shovelers and ruddy ducks are common waterfowl species nesting and raising broods on Market Lake WMA. Several thousand white-faced ibis nest in scattered colonies throughout impoundment areas, and numerous gulls, terns, egrets, herons and grebes are common during spring and summer months.
A peregrine falcon nesting structure has been erected on Market Lake WMA to attract a nesting pair. Bald and golden eagles are regular winter guests, while red-tailed and Swainson’s hawks, American kestrels and northern harriers are commonly observed during spring and summer months. Long-eared, short-eared and saw-whet owls frequently nest on Market Lake WMA lands.
A number of songbirds pause at Market Lake during spring migration while others make Market Lake their final spring destination. Swallows, chickadees, sparrows and blackbirds all nest on Market Lake WMA and can be viewed throughout the summer months. Ring-necked pheasant, grey partridge and sage grouse inhabit Market Lake year-round.
Mammals frequenting Market Lake WMA include both mule and white-tailed deer and a small moose population. In severe winters, migrating elk take advantage of the area’s cover and food resources. Cottontail rabbits, muskrats, mink, red fox, raccoons, coyotes and long-tailed weasels and otter call Market Lake WMA home.
