Public Use of Market Lake WMA

With over 200 bird and mammal species frequenting the area during the year, Market Lake WMA offers groups and individuals the chance to observe a variety of wildlife in a natural setting. While visitors can experience much of this wildlife richness from a vehicle, an outing to Market Lake will be much more rewarding if the area is roamed on foot. A walk along the dikes of the main marsh will provide excellent waterfowl viewing opportunities, and the windrows just south of North Agriculture Road are an excellent place to see and hear songbirds.

Regardless of the methods used to experience Market Lake and its wildlife, the trip will certainly be a rewarding use of time. Remember that Market Lake WMA offers a variety of other recreational pursuits including wildlife photography, hiking, horseback riding and picnicking.

Market Lake WMA provides waterfowl hunting opportunities, particularly early in the hunting season prior to ice-over of shallow water areas. While most impoundment areas are shallow enough for wading, they frequently have canals and/or ditches along their perimeters which require a boat or float tube to cross.

There is limited upland game hunting on Market Lake WMA, with resident bird populations varying from year to year. Captive-raised pheasants are released to provide additional hunting opportunities. Cottontail rabbits frequent the lava rock ledges of Market Lake WMA, providing hunters with fast-paced hunting action.
