Visiting Fort Boise WMA

Visiting Hours - Fort Boise Wildlife Management Area is open year-round. School and other groups are encouraged to visit Fort Boise WMA in the spring when waterfowl numbers peak. Those interested in a WMA guided tour should call well in advance of the proposed trip date. IDFG personnel will make every effort to accommodate group trips.

WMA entry hours are:
April 1- September 30: 5:00 a.m. to 10 p.m.
October 1 - March 31: 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Access for the Disabled - For persons with disabilities, access within Fort Boise WMA varies by area. Visitors with special needs are encouraged to contact WMA management personnel to determine which areas are most suitable for physically-challenged visitors. In all cases, visitors are encouraged to assess their own abilities before entering Fort Boise WMA.

Vehicles/Parking - Use of motorized vehicles, including ATVs, is permitted only on established roadways. These restrictions protect area vegetation and minimize wildlife disturbance. Please park only in designated areas.

Area Restrictions - A portion of Fort Boise WMA is closed seasonally to provide undisturbed nesting and rearing areas for waterfowl and upland game birds. Another portion is a designated waterfowl resting area and is closed to public entry year-round. Watch for these areas and make your conservation contribution by respecting area closures.

Wildlife Observation/Photography - Fort Boise WMA is best known for its spring and fall concentrations of migrating waterfowl. Visitors are welcome to hike throughout the WMA for wildlife viewing and photography purposes. Remember to watch for area closure signs. To enhance your outing, a bird species checklist is available at WMA headquarters or from the IDFG regional office in Nampa.

Hunting/Fishing - Both hunting and fishing are allowed on Fort Boise WMA, but specific rules and access to some WMA locations may change from year to year. Consult current rules for more details. Waterfowl hunters should use caution when wading through WMA ponds, marshes and wetlands.

Boating - Public boat ramps are located along the Snake River. Most WMA ponds are too shallow for boating. Consult with the WMA manager for further information.

Camping - Overnight camping is permitted in designated areas for no more than five days within any 30-day period. Camping is restricted to sites where campfires can be readily controlled and where vehicles and equipment will not block roads or trails. “Pack in” camping is allowed, provided areas are left clean.

Fires/Firewood Cutting - All fires must be attended and may be prohibited during periods of wildfire danger. Firewood cutting and removal of materials from their natural setting are prohibited.

Pets - Pets must be leashed or under close control at all times on Fort Boise WMA, with the exception of bird dogs during hunting seasons. Note that trappers are using the area during winter and early spring. The release or abandonment of domestic animals on Fort Boise WMA is prohibited.
