Why the Landowner Incentive Program Is So Important to Idaho
While the majority of land in Idaho is publicly owned, the remaining private property is frequently situated near valuable water and riparian habitats, productive springs, seeps and meadows that are favored by much of the state's wildlife. Due to the proximity to water, much of this land is in farming and ranching production, but at the same time is a valuable resource for wildlife. Nearly all wildlife depends on water and associated riparian habitats.
This is an important program for Idaho for several reasons:
- Idaho is the fourth fastest growing state in the Nation.
- Habitat loss, fragmentation, fire and development will continue to threaten wildlife habitat.
- Private lands harbor a high percentage of native wildlife species.
- Idaho values its wildlife and the habitats upon which they depend.
- Private Landowners are an essential part of conservation.
Idaho's Landowner Incentive Program provides technical assistance to private landowners for the protection, enhancement, or restoration of habitat to benefit at-risk species on privately owned lands.
