Grizzly bears are found in four ecosystems that are partly within Idaho; they are the Selkirks, Cabinet-Yaak, Bitterroot and Yellowstone.
In 2007, grizzlies in the Yellowstone ecosystem were removed from the endangered species list. Yellowstone grizzlies are now managed by the states and National Park Service, and in Idaho under the Idaho Yellowstone Grizzly Bear Management Plan. Bears in the other ecosystems are still under the oversight of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, but the states are assisting with on-the ground management.
Idaho Fish and Game assists with grizzly bear recovery, conservation and management, providing technical assistance, monitoring, enforcement, information and education, coordination and research. The state's efforts are funded through federal grants and cost sharing.
For information about the ecosystems, see the Federal Grizzly Bear Recovery link.
