Living with BearsAs people in Idaho and the West increasingly move into bear habitat and as grizzly bear numbers in some parts of the Pacific Northwest increase, encounters between people and bruins become increasingly likely. Without question, grizzly bears can be dangerous under some circumstances, especially if they learn to associate humans and their residences with food. But people need not fear grizzlies. Campers, hunters, hikers, livestock owners and rural residents can take a number of measures to discourage grizzly bears and other unwelcome wildlife guests from venturing too close to homes, camps or livestock in grizzly bear country. Bears have a phenomenal sense of smell, and anything that smell good to humans smells good to a bear. If you can't keep the smell from reaching the bear, you must keep the bear from reaching the source of the smell. |
