Fish and Game's Nongame Wildlife Program provides grant funds to public and private individuals, groups, or organizations to support cooperative cost-share projects for the conservation of native fish and wildlife species designated as "Species of Greatest Conservation Need." |
The purpose of the State Wildlife Grant program is to meet the needs of "at risk" wildlife species by focusing proactive conservation efforts on these species and their habitats before the need develops to list them as threatened or endangered.
The money is provided through a 2000 federal assistance program for state wildlife agencies that evolved out of the "Teaming With Wildlife" and Conservation and Reinvestment Act initiatives in the late 1990s.
Fish and Game's goal with this competitive grant program is to fund well-designed projects that provide conservation benefits to Species of Greatest Conservation Need and priority habitats, and address conservation issues and implement recommended conservation actions outlined in the Idaho Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategy. The Conservation Strategy is the guiding document for how State Wildlife Grant funding will be spent in Idaho.
