Wetland Indicator Status

The National List of Plant Species that Occur in Wetlands was developed as an appendix to the Classification of Wetlands and Deepwater Habitats of the United States (Cowardin et al. 1979) to assist in the field identification of wetlands and hydrophytic species. Taxonomic refinements to an original draft list compiled in 1977 and assignment of an indicator status based on wetland fidelity was completed in 1988. The list was revised again in 1996 and is currently undergoing public review and comment.

On the National List, plants are assigned an Indicator Status by Region. Idaho is within the Pacific Northwest Region or Region 5. The indicator status ranges from Obligate Wetland (plants that almost always occur in wetlands) to Upland (plants that usually occur in non-wetlands).

The following table contains Wetland Indicator Status based on the 1996 draft revision for special status plant species and is arranged by scientific name.

The list only includes special status plant species that are tracked by the Idaho Conservation Data Center.
