Pheasant Stocking Program

The purpose of the pheasant-stocking program is to provide additional hunting opportunities on public land throughout the pheasant-hunting season. The number of roosters scheduled for release in 2008 is approximately 13,100.

In general, pheasants are released twice a week on Wildlife Management Areas throughout the hunting season (see the release schedule for specific sites). The one exception is in the Magic Valley Region where stocking takes place once a week on Niagara Springs WMA. A list of the wildlife tracts where pheasants are stocked can be obtained at the Magic Valley regional office.

Pheasant hunters are reminded to purchase a WMA Pheasant Permit if they intend to hunt WMAs where pheasants are stocked. Each permit is good for 6 roosters and additional permits may be purchased (see links below). Hunters must validate their permit, in writing, immediately upon harvesting a rooster. The daily bag limit is 2 and the possession limit is 4 roosters while hunting pheasants at these specific WMAs. Please refer to the current Upland Bird Hunting Seasons and Rules for more information.

New Hunter Orange Rule: All upland game hunters and upland game bird hunters are required to wear visible hunter orange of at least 36 square inches above the waist during pheasant season when hunting on Wildlife Management Areas where pheasants are stocked. Note: A hunter orange hat meets this requirement.
