Weekly Fishing Report
Updated: October 8, 2008
This report highlights a few of the best places to fish, what anglers are using and what they are catching. The information is compiled from regional Fish and Game fishery managers, local tackle shops and anglers.
Fishing really is good this time of year on all of the Southeast Region reservoirs. The good spring weather resulted in enough carry-over water to provide good fishing this fall, winter and into next year.
Little has changed in the region. The reservoirs are slowly cooling off which is turning on trout in Chesterfield and Daniels reservoirs. Catch rates are good at Chesterfield Reservoir remains good, gold and brown leeches are working well.
Hot spots also include Twenty-four Mile and Springfield reservoirs. Fishing is good with hare’s ears, damsel flies and green apples. Most of the smaller lakes are good for bluegill and crappie, and the rivers and streams good for trout.
The irrigation season is winding down, and the water level is dropping at several reservoirs. Bass fishing has been decent on Devils, Twin Lakes, Glendale and Condie reservoirs, and plenty of small smallmouth bass are being caught on the Snake River.
To catch the big bass in Weston Creek Reservoir anglers have to get down below the little ones. This is a no-motors reservoir.
The water level in the American Falls Reservoir is very low. Foster Reservoir has been put on salvage for construction of a new irrigation delivery system on the dam.
The flow in the Snake River below American Falls Reservoir is dropping, but slower than usual. Fishing there should be fantastic for the last few weeks of October. But the section of river below American Falls Dam to Eagle Rock closes October 31.
Fishing in the Bear River below Oneida Dam has picked up. Flows have dropped to fishable levels, and anglers are catching rainbow trout and smallmouth bass.
The Portneuf River is low and clear fish are spooky.
The Upper Blackfoot River, on the other hand is worth the trip for the scenery alone, to say nothing of the fishing. The cutthroat spawning run out of the reservoir this year was about 540 cutthroat trout – the biggest run since 2003 and should provide for some exciting fishing this year.
