Description: In spring, look for Common Loon and nearly 20 duck species. A large colony (~10,000 pairs) of Ring-billed and California Gulls is typically on nearby "Gull Island "by early May. Forster’s, Caspian, and Common Terns will also be found in the colony. If Big Hole Bay is flooded, spring migration also brings various grebes, American White Pelican, Double-crested Cormorant, and diving ducks. In July, look for Least and Western Sandpipers and Marbled Godwit. Baird’s Sandpiper arrive in large flocks around the first week of Aug. Watch for Stilt Sandpiper mixed in with Lesser Yellowlegs during Aug and Sept. Check mudflats during fall migration for over 30 species including Great Blue Heron, Great and Snowy Egrets, and Black-crowned Night-Heron. Bald Eagle can be seen during the winter.
