Directions: From Macks Inn, N on US 20 for 1.7 mi; R at mp 394.3 on FR 059 (Big Springs Loop Rd); go 4 mi; at intersection of FR 059 and FR 066 zero odometer and go L onto FR 066 (Black Canyon Loop Rd) and continue to the intersection of FR 066 and FR 071 (mi 9); all roads beyond FR 071 are closed; backtrack to US 20.
Description: Red-naped Sapsucker, Mountain Chickadee, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Brown Creeper, Golden-crowned and Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Hermit Thrush, Red Crossbill, and Pine Siskin can be seen regularly in late spring and summer. Listen for Dusky and Hammond’s Flycatchers during June. Coniferous forest may yield Northern Goshawk, Blue Grouse, Gray and Steller’s Jay, Townsend’s Solitaire, Pine Grosbeak, and Cassin’s Finch during the breeding season. In the fall, look for Clark’s Nutcracker and raptors.
