Directions: Fill up with gas in Salmon or Challis before you begin. Between Salmon and Challis, at mp 254.8 turn W onto Morgan Creek Rd (FR 055); 20 mi to summit (7578 ft); descend along Panther Creek to confluence with Salmon River; R (E) on FR 030 for 28 mi to North Fork and US 93.

Description: In the riparian areas look for Lewis’s Woodpecker, Song Sparrow, Western Wood-Pewee, Yellow, MacGillivray’s, and Wilson’s Warblers, Yellow-breasted Chat, Black-headed Grosbeak, Veery, Lazuli Bunting, and Fox Sparrow. In surrounding cliffs and canyons, listen and watch for Canyon Wren and Chukar. Look for Greater Sage-Grouse, Rock Wren, Sage Thrasher, Green-tailed Towhee, Western Meadowlark, and Brewer’s and Vesper Sparrows in the sagebrush bench lands. In forested habitats, watch for Blue Grouse, Chipping Sparrow, American Three-toed, Pileated, and Hairy Woodpeckers, Great Gray Owl, Northern Goshawk, Hammond’s and Dusky Flycatchers, Mountain Chickadee, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Swainson’s and Hermit Thrushes, Western Tanager, and Red Crossbill. Look for American Kestrel, Golden Eagle, and Prairie Falcon.
