Site Location

Directions: From Challis, US 93 S for 6.9 mi; just S of mp 156, R (W) into small turnout overlooking the reservoir; private land; bird from turn-out; use caution when returning to the highway.

Description: Bar-D Reservoir is a seasonal jewel for spring and fall migrating shorebirds and waterfowl. Shorebird species that stop over include American Avocet, Solitary, Western, Least, and Baird’s Sandpipers, and Red-necked and Wilson’s Phalaropes. Black Tern may be spotted winging over the pond, while Eared Grebe can be seen making short foraging dives. Possible waterfowl species include Tundra and Trumpeter (late fall) Swans, Canada Goose, Mallard, American Wigeon, Cinnamon Teal, Canvasback, Redhead, and Barrow’s Goldeneye. Viewing is best accomplished with a high-powered scope.
