Directions: At mp 278 on US 95 turn W onto US 95A for 2.1 mi to the lake; SW of the lake on Forest Rd is the Wolf Education Center; following Forest Rd S to Soldiers Meadow Rd will allow you to visit Craig Mountain/Waha Lake site (N43).
Description: Winchester Lake is located at the eastern foot of Craig Mountain, surrounded by conifers and brushy hillsides, with a small marsh at the lake inlet. Ruffed Grouse, Red-breasted and White-breasted Nuthatches, Common Loon, Evening Grosbeak, Steller’s Jay, and several waterfowl species are commonly found at the park. Bald Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, and Northern Goshawk are rare but present. There is a nature trail next to the park HQ and other trails around the lake.
