Directions: 4 sites along US 12 between mp 148 and 165; mp 148 is COLGATE LICKS: take the short hike (0.5 mi) either R or L from parking lot; mp 158 is WHITEHOUSE & WENDOVER CAMPGROUNDS/POND: stop at pond and bird shrubby areas in campground; mp 162 is POWELL: head into ranger station area and bird around schoolhouse and area overlooking the river; mp 167 is DEVOTO MEMORIAL GROVE: walk interpretive trail and carefully cross hwy to hiking loop trail.
Description: COLGATE LICKS: Look for Blue, Spruce, and Ruffed Grouse, Pileated and Hairy Woodpeckers, Steller’s and Gray Jays, Winter Wren, Varied Thrush, Western Tanager, and Rufous and Calliope Hummingbirds. WHITEHOUSE & WENDOVER CAMPGROUND/POND: Look for Harlequin Duck, Spotted Sandpiper, Bald Eagle (winter only), grouse, hummingbirds, Northern Waterthrush, Ring-necked Duck (spring), Vaux’s Swift, Steller’s Jay, Varied Thrush, swallows, Warbling and Cassin’s Vireos, and Townsend’s and MacGillivray’s Warblers. POWELL: Harlequin Duck, Willow Flycatcher, Warbling Vireo, American Redstart, and Pine Siskin. DEVOTO GROVE: Townsend’s and MacGillivray’s Warblers, and Cedar Waxwing can be seen.
