Directions: From Lewiston, drive E on US 12/95 for 7.5 mi; stay on US 12 toward Orofino (if you cross the Clearwater River, you have gone the wrong way!); 0.5 mi past the underpass, turn L (N) at mp 11.1 onto graveled Coyote Gulch Rd (Nez Perce CR 170); bird from the rd for 3-6 mi; surrounding land is private.
Description: Highlights here include Willow Flycatcher, Gray Catbird, and Veery. Rock Wren in the grassland areas (with rock out-croppings); Canyon Wren and Horned Lark sometimes near the quarry. This is a reliable spot for Bewick’s Wren. During spring migration, Cordilleran Flycatcher, Western Tanager, and Black-headed Grosbeak can be seen. Spring and summer bring Grasshopper Sparrow, California Quail, owls, Lazuli Bunting, Spotted Towhee, and MacGillivray’s Warbler. In fall, look for Lincoln’s and White-crowned Sparrows. In winter, watch for Downy Woodpecker, Black-capped Chickadee,
Bewick’s Wren, Golden-crowned Kinglet, and Northern Shrike.
